Recommended Clients
Which Client is recommended for my OS/Desktop?
- Unix(-like) with GNOME 1.x, XFce <=3.x or other GTK+1 based desktop: Gabber is the recommended Client for the GNOME or XFce(<=3) desktop.
- Unix(-like) with GNOME 2.x, XFce 4.x or other GTK+2 based desktop: Until now there is no exclusive GTK+2/GNOME2 client that fully implements the Jabber protocol (means: all of legalized.de's features). Gabber2 is still under development and lacks a lot of features. The GTK+2 multi-protocol client Gaim handles the Jabber core features but does i.e. not support transport configuration or SSL. Since version 0.8.8 the GTK+1/GNOME1 client Gabber supports GNOME2 and XFce4 integration through the freedesktop.org system tray feature. Due to this Gabber is the recommended client for the GNOME2 desktop until a full featured version of Gabber2 is released.
- Unix(-like) with native X environment: Tkabber is a full featured Jabber client written in TCL using the Tk toolkit for its UI.
- Unix(-like) with other X desktop environment: Of course you may use any X-based Jabber client but you may encounter certain limitations due to missing integration features for your desktop or you might have to install a lot of libraries/toolkits to get them working. So we recommend you check out the Jabber.org client list for Unix(-like) OSes. If you find a client that suits your needs we would like to receive EMail <cru (at) zodia (dot) de> from you.
- Unix(-like) on console: IMCom is a console based Jabber client written in Python that almost fully implements the Jabber protocol and its extensions.
- 32bit Windows: JAJC is recommended for all Windows versions (Win95 or higher).
- MacOS: Until now we did not test any clients for MacOS. Please check out the clients you find on the Jabber.org client list for MacOS. If you find one you like we would like to receive EMail <cru (at) zodia (dot) de> from you.
